The History Of Manchester United: From Humble Beginnings To Global Giants Formation & Early Years (1878-1902) The club was founded in 1878 as Newton Heath L&YR Football Club by railway line workers of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway. The club played its early games in green and gold colours and struggled financially. The club was on the verge of bankruptcy in 1902, but local brewery owner John Henry Davies stepped in to save it.
